What Healthcare Employers Want From A Candidate Interview

Have you got an upcoming interview? Or perhaps, you just want to be 100% prepared when you attend your next Healthcare Job Fair event- after all, our job fairs give you the possibility of interviewing with employers on the same day!

To help you get the most out of your next interview, we spoke to some leading NHS employers like Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals and Imperial College Healthcare about what they like to see and hear.

Originality

You must have heard this quote at some point in your life, “You laugh because I am different, I laugh because you are all the same”- well employers feel exactly that way! When interviewing a candidate, employers want someone that can think independently, creatively, and more importantly, that can demonstrate that they are different and bring originality and personality to their work. After all, a job in healthcare means working and dealing with all kinds of people, adapting to their emotions, personalities and above all, being the embodiment of trust and care for patients and staff alike.

Passion

There’s no point in coming in for a job interview if you have zero passion for what you do. But you already knew that, otherwise why would you be in this field of work? Whether you’ve been in healthcare for the most part of your life, or just starting out, passion for what you do and love everyday should be number one! Employers want to see commitment to yourself in terms of your own growth and development, to your work, to the people you are surrounded with and to all those you impact and help along the way.

Evidence Based Knowledge

Coming into an interview and having the best personality will get you far, but won’t get you all the way! As they say, you can talk the talk but if you can’t walk the walk…. They will test you on what you know and have studied, so if you don’t have any qualifications or aren’t currently studying then you might want to change that! Employers want you to think on your feet, understand you as a person and how you think and would react in different scenarios. They want someone who is reliable, knowledgeable, willing to learn and has their head screwed on!
